Marshall McKay

Chairman McKay leads Yocha Dehe’s elected tribal council, governing body of the sovereign tribal nation, and oversees operations for the Tribe and their business enterprises. In January 2012, McKay was re-elected to serve his third term as Chairman. A cornerstone of Chairman McKay’s leadership is his commitment to cultural renewal and preservation, extending that focus into educational arenas and sustainable land-use practices.

Chairman McKay oversees the day-to-day operations of the tribal government and the Tribe’s Cache Creek Casino Resort. Additionally, McKay serves as chair of Community Fund Committee and Cache Creek Casino Resort Board, and is a member of the Fire Commission, the Cultural Committee, the Property, Farm and Ranch Committee, the Health and Wellness Committee, and the Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy Board. Before becoming Tribal Chairman, he served as Tribal Treasurer and Tribal Secretary.

Chairman McKay currently sits on the UC Davis Foundation Board, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, the board of the Native American Rights Fund, and was elected chair of the board of the Autry National Center beginning December 2010.

He also serves as a founding member and chair of the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation, and in November 2007, was appointed to the Native American Heritage Commission board by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. McKay’s mother, artist Mabel McKay, was one of the founding commissioners for the Native American Heritage Commission.

Dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Native arts and culture, and to the recognition and manifestation of sovereign tribal governance, Chairman McKay travels extensively on a regional and national basis to participate in conferences, summits and fundraisers that support initiatives important to the government and community of the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation.
